One of the hardest things for someone in a leadership position to do is to receive unfavorable information from one of your team members and not being able to do anything about it because the information was communicated to you last minute. When we have an open and honest culture and team members are not afraid of the consequences of communicating unfavorable information, it allows the team to put their heads together to address the situation and make plan that can be acceptable to all parties. Below is an example of one such instance: 


Sunitha Akula was asked to work with her test team to come up with an estimate of how long it would take to complete the testing work on a specific program increment of a Client’s Project. She provided her honest estimate and breakdown of the work knowing that it was eight days later than the deadline. Being honest about the effort allowed us to bring this to our customer’s attention and work together as a team to come up with a new plan that was aggressive, but achievable and acceptable to both sides.
